Good afternoon, Malaysia. This is me Ng Wi Kiat from GP news and today I would like to talk about a debate that could possibly determine the future of mankind. Yes, I am referring to the peak oil debate. This debate has been going on for quite some time and it’s throwing the world into panic. Peak oil is defined as a period in time, when oil extraction rates will reach its peak or maximum and the supply will then decline.
Scientists around the world are debating around the world about when it will happen and it’s affect on our world. Some say it will happen in the next 20 or 30 years, some say it will never happen and there are even some that say it’s happening right now. Some parties in the oil company believe that it will never occur and that peak oil is a myth, while other parties are digging up evidence to probe it’s existence.
Whether fact or fiction, peak oil will affect us it many ways but you must be thinking now, how will this affect me and my life? Well firstly you need to know that everything around us revolves around oil, all goods and supplies are shipped directly by trucks, ships planes etc. and all of them requires oil, so the prices of goods also link with oil. If peak oil happens, the cost of living would skyrocket as the supply of oil diminishes. Also, peak oil would the number of vehicles on the road would decrease as the price of fuel goes up, fewer people can afford to buy petrol for their cars and trucks.
Next, we would be living in terror. Countries may be sending threats of war if we don’t hand over our oil. Crime rates may go up as people fight over the remaining oil. Lastly, we would be eventually be knocked back to the stone age, with no fuel, cars wouldn’t move, machines wouldn’t run, the earth would be in a standstill.
This is why we need to push for the innovation of alternative fuel sources. we should start to consider the possibility of using solar, wind, water, geothermal etc. So that we can be prepared if peak oil does actually come. Governments should also consider preserving and conserving the oil they have for later use. The public can also get into the cause by practicing green habits like recycling and offing electrical appliances when not in use. As my report comes to a close, I end this broadcast with a simple yet powerful quote, “Whether or not peak oil will come, this is the century where humans must learn to live without fossil fuels”
Thank You.
